5 Reasons Why Christopher Nolan Needs to Direct the Next Bond Movie?
By Avik Basak
Whether he admits it or not, Christopher Nolan has always wanted to direct a James Bond film. The British-American filmmaker has been a fan of the franchise for a long time and has always said that he would only direct a Bond film if the franchise truly needed him. Now, when he is indeed in talks with the Bond producers (according to the latest reports), it is high time that he steps into the shoes of Sam Mendes to helm the twenty-fifth instalment in this longest running franchise.
So, let’s take a look at the five valid reasons why Nolan “needs” to be behind the camera for the next outing of the British spy.
The Character Needs Reinvention
It is confirmed by the reports surfaced recently that Daniel Craig is indeed returning to fulfil his five-movie contract and will be seen as 007 in the next Bond movie, hence it is unlikely to see someone like Tom Hiddleston or Tom Hardy in the character to give it a much-needed freshness. Still, if Nolan gets the nod to helm the project, he can give the character a revamp without needing to have a new face. Courtesy of his The Dark Knight Trilogy, we know that the Academy Award-nominated director excels when it comes to the reinvention of a character.
He Admires Bond
In Nolan’s Inception (2010), remember that scene near the beginning where Cobb moves along in Saito’s Japanese palace, eliminating guards after guards with his silenced pistol? Does not that scene look a little “Bond-ish”? Yes, it does and you can find a lot of Bond inspiration in Nolan’s other works as well. So, it will be a safe bet to bestow the directorial duties to someone who has so much admiration for this iconic character.
The Nolan-Craig Combination
It is true that Daniel Craig has never worked with Nolan before but there can be no doubt about the kind of dynamics the duo can bring to this epic character. Craig is known to put his heart and soul into every character he plays and with Nolan’s direction and narrative, he can turn the next outing into one of the best Bond movies ever. Also, Craig was reluctant to return for the fifth time, so maybe Nolan can provide him with some inspiration that will make him interested again in playing this character, something he has done with distinction in the past.
The ‘Nolan Touch’
It is not a rocket science and anyone familiar with Christopher Nolan’s filmography would know that he has some kind of a ‘Midas touch’. Everything he touches or makes sprouts gold at the box office. Moreover, he is one of the very few filmmakers in Hollywood whose films have been both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Even one of his earliest films, Memento (2000) which was made on an approximate budget of $9 million and was rejected by an array of distributors, went on to gross an approximate $39.7 million with its limited release and was lauded by critics all around the globe. One can only imagine what would happen when a Bond film made by him hits the theatres.
Mendes Might Step Down
Sam Mendes, the director of the last two entries in the series, has said in an interview that he would not be returning to helm the next instalment. Mendes, who gave the series two of its highest-grossing films, Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), has stated during the last year’s Hay festival that it was time for somebody else to step up to make the next film. So, who could be a better replacement for him than Christopher Nolan who like Mendes is also known for his love for character-driven stories.
